Meet Doug Winter

Doug has spent most of his life in the field of numismatics. A collector beginning at the age of seven, by the age of ten he was buying and selling at conventions in the New York City area. A member of the ANA since 1972 ( at the age of 13!), and Doug had his first table at a coin show before his 16th birthday.

After graduating from college with a degree in English, Doug joined Steve Ivy Rare Coins in Texas. From 1982 through 1985 he served as the Director of Research. Responsibilities included writing auction catalogues, producing fixed price lists, researching rare and unusual coins in stock, and selling rarer-date coins. It was this time when Doug became keenly interested in rare 18th and 19th century United States gold coins.

1985: Founds Douglas Winter Consulting

In 1985, Doug went solo and opened his first company, handling research for other coin companies. Some clients included Sotheby’s, Superior, Christie’s, Mid-American Rare Coin Auctions, and R.M. Smythe.

Jenna Van Valen

Jenna Van Valen

Jenna literally grew up in rare coins, she is the daughter of numismatic personality Frank Van Valen. In 2001, Jenna began working in the auction department at Bowers & Merena, eventually putting her photography experience to use in the photo and graphics department.

In 2003, she became the 7th employee at ANR, which later merged with Stack’s. Though still working in photography and graphics, you may recall her as The Voice when you called ANR/Stack’s Bowers. Her decade in Wolfeboro, NH, firmly planted her as a “lifer” in coins.

After a move cross-country to Oregon, Jenna began working with Doug in the fall of 2009. Since then, she’s taken on managing the websites, design and editing of Doug’s books, all the photography, and many other tasks that have to get done behind the scenes so DW can focus on coins and clients.

She is a member of the ANA and FUN, and Jenna enjoys attending the World’s Fair of Money every summer.

Jenna is an award-winning photographer, and when not working in coins, she specializes in destination wedding and travel photography.
